In the USA people refer to the French charity, MSF, as Doctors Without Borders. That is acceptable as translating organisation names is fine. However I saw a presenter abbreviate that to DWB--- NO NO NO! It is MSF - you never translate initials. I would argue that the translation is incorrect and that there is no need to translate to Doctors Without Borders anyway!! MSF stands for Médecins Sans Frontières- to translate into English - MEDECINE SANS Borders though the English words frontiers could suffice. What part of MSF needs mis translating for people not to understand what Médecins Sans Frontières actually means!!! Before anyone says anything the French word Sans is in the Oxford English Dictionary. It gives the origin as ME (Middle English.) ME begins in 1066 and lasts until 1355. It is divided into 7 dialects and it is unlikely that a word like sans reached Middle North Eastern but it would have been used in Middle Southern, and we know from Chaucer that it was used in Middle London(MLE) . Chaucer wrote in MLE and that was chosen as the language of the Court and therefore the new standard English that we speak today. The word had died out in England but has been reintroduced over the last few decades from France. In the UK MSF has always been named in its native French - there is no need for TV companies to treat the people of the USA with such contempt as to spoon feed them with mis translations!!!!!! --G side note - the Muslim Brotherhood governing party in Turkey is the AKP - Justice and Development Party - no need to say Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi However there is no excuse for abbreviating the party name to JDP.
