In the United States, the public school curriculum and undoubtedly still many historians assert that throughout the U.S.-Mexican War significant opposition to the conflict never went beyond New England—and even then the antiwar movement was in the minority. These educators and education officials apparently haven’t read what the troops had to say during the latter part of the war. One hundred and sixty-six years and one day ago—October 5, 1847—as increasingly demoralized U.S. troops occupied Mexico and were beset on all sides by rancheros (guerrillas), a newspaper they themselves published in Veracruz to be read by their own spoke for many: “At the commencement of the war… many of us entertained extravagant notions of the country which we were about to invade… We were to rove in the delicious gardens of the south, basking in the charms of some beautiful maiden as she wreathed the flowers, or offered the fruits of her native soil… But a few days in Mexico soon dispelled the illusion… The gardens turned out to be vast forests of palm, maguey and cactus.”
