In the Yancey Times Journal April 23, 2014 Guilty verdict in overdose death case A Yancey County jury deliberated just two hours April 17 and found John Pritchard, a former substance abuse counselor, guilty of second-degree murder after he illegally sold prescription morphine pills to Jonathan Whitson, 29, who died from an overdose on March 6, 2011. The prosecution had to prove that Pritchard was reckless in his actions, knowing that the morphine had the potential to cause death. Water is flowing for Lincoln Park residents For years, residents of the Lincoln Park community have lived with extremely low water pressure – to the point they that had to call neighbors if they planned to wash clothes or take a shower. Last Thursday, grateful residents came out to celebrate their new pump station and thank Burnsville’s public works director Anthony Hensley and town council members for putting resolution of the situation at the top of their priority list. Broadband and health care via telemedicine Dr. Steve North conducted a house call from the Yancey County Technology Center using high-speed broadband via Country Cablevision and equipment from AMD Global Telemedicine. The event was held to demonstrate how telemedicine technology and the new broadband service that will soon be available to nearly 100% of the population in Yancey and Mitchell counties could be used to help deliver clinical healthcare in rural communities. One-stop voting and absentee ballot requests Yancey County Board of Elections is taking requests for absentee ballots for the May 6 Primary Election. One-stop voting starts Thursday, April 24, and continues through May 2 with office open until 6:30 daily and until 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
