In the aftermath of September 11, Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi wrote a 1400 page tome titled Understanding Jihad. In it he explains when jihad is necessary, who can declare it and in what conditions. No theologian dared to propose that Jihad is an outdated concept that has no place in the 21st century. Many Arab intellectuals published apologetic articles condemning the hijackers, painting Islam as a religion of peace opposed to every form of violence. Almost no one dared publicly admit how very old the virus of jihad actually was - the same age as Islam, to be precise. Jihad as understood and practiced by the Prophet and his successors is the problem. The quranic division of the world into believers and unbelievers is the problem. The inviolability of the Prophet and of the Qur’an is the problem. The inability of educators to break away from the prophet as a role model and Quran as a guiding book for all times is the problem. Jihad as an end in itself is the problem - a struggle set to last until the end of days.
