In the amalgamated struggle for student financial and socio-economic emancipation, SASCO NMMU has; • Successfully implemented the Free Driver’s Licence Programme. • Successfully convinced NMMU to accept standard application fee. From 2015, NMMU application fee will be R100 for all students. • Championed Shuttle Shelters on all campuses to ensure that students are not exposed to bad weather elements. • Through its Right To Learn march in the first semester ensured that B-tech students receive funding from NSFAS (only B-tech students at NMMU receive such funding in the entire RSA). • Engaged with NSFAS and managed to secure meal allowances for students registered under NSFAS and we calling for an increase of these meal allowances. • Continued to liaise with various retailers (i.e. Pick and Pay, Checkers and Shoprite) to allow the use of NSFAS intellicards to purchase goods and services. And we are demanding that on campus students be allowed to use these retailers as well. • Been central in applying pressure to NSFAS to increase the allocation of Funds. • Been successful in introducing online NSFAS agreement forms. • Intensified its call for the building of more on campus residences and has already engaged management on this matter. • Continued to strive for the betterment of living conditions for students residing in off-campus residences to ensure that the environment there is conducive for living and learning. • Ensured that shuttle services are effective and efficient in all campuses. • Acknowledged that Shuttle services need improvement due to annual rising demands by the influx of students who increase in numbers per semester. • Persuaded the NMMU to open the libraries until 00:00. • Ensured the installation of ATMs at Second Avenue • Continued to negotiate for another ATM close to residences at South Campus. • Pushed and continues to advocate for equal treatment of all international students regardless of their country of origin.
