In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. - GENESIS (1:1) בְּרֵאשִׁית בָּרָא אֱ-לֹהִים אֵת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֵת הָאָרֶץ - בראשית א:א be-ray-SHEET ba-RA eh-loe-HEEM ayt ha-sha-ma-YEEM ve-ATE ha-ah-RETZ We begin anew this Shabbat and start reading the Book of Genesis. Rabbinic sages ask, if the Bible is essentially a book of law, why does it begin with all of the stories of Genesis? The answer will blow you away. Medieval Torah commentators explained hundreds of years ago, that one day foreign nations will accuse the Jewish People of stealing the Land of Israel. We will then point to the Bible and claim that the Bible begins with Creation to emphasize that God created the world, the earth belongs to Him and He can divide it up and give land to whomever He wishes and He gave the Land of Israel to Abraham and his descendants!
