In the bizarre debate in the US about contraception and insurance coverage, one aspect has gone unnoticed: only 14% of women use the pill exclusively to avoid pregnancy. Most women in the US use it for health reasons in addition to fertility control, and for a sizeable minority, health reasons are the only reasons. So denying coverage for contraceptives not only undermines access to tools for exercising control over ones reproductive ability, but also means women are arbitrarily deprived of a useful treatment for a number of conditions.
