In the dim morning light, as I dealt with the wrong-headed - TopicsExpress

In the dim morning light, as I dealt with the wrong-headed decisions of the American people that I must face today, Doris Kearns Goodwin brought me to the melancholy Apocalypse and Epilogue of her book about the strange friendships, collaborations, and heartbreaking rifts among TR, Taft, and the journalists of the Progressive Era. The Bully Pulpit occasionally brought moisture to my eyes, but throughout brought a much clearer understanding to me of the folks who, to a large degree, gave us the progressive republic we have today. The relationships are touching... • the loss of Archie Butt. Has there ever been a man more intimately loved by two presidents, or tragically affected by their parting of the ways? • the decision of Taft to forego even mild criticism of TR despite the former presidents unconscionable mud-throwing. Roosevelt was my closest friend. • Tafts instigation of a reunion, and then consultation on speeches and letters. • Tafts tears at TRs funeral. Someone should make a movie.
