In the early 1960s, the CPI MP in Rajya Sabha said that the then West Bengal CM and Congress leader had bought the Stephen House at the Dalhousie Square. Atulya Ghosh, then WBPCC President and MP, issued a statement saying that it was not true and disclosed facts on the ownership of Stephen House. Bhupesh Gupta immediately issued an apology. So the communists did not stick to an untruthful statement , contrary to the canard by the anti-Left scribes. Gupta was born on 20 October,1915. He voluntarily lived like a pauper although he came of a Zamindat family, refused to take coompensation of over Rs 50 lakhs from the Bangladesh government stating that the wealth was amassed through economic oppression on the subjects. He submitted his assets as an MP. It was a portable typewriter only. Let me share with you an event. He was going on a foreign trip (attending a party congress in an East European congress , leading a very small CPI delegation. While he was about to move towards security check, his trousers button was torn off (probably it was not his, as he used to wear a short kurta and a dhoti (both cheap-priced). He wanted some one to give him a cotton rope and he just fastened his waste with that. Co-passengers were silently laughing but Bhupeshda was unfazed and walked onwards with his typical smartness. That was Comrade Bhupesh Gupta. Red, red and red salute to Bhupeshda.
