In the early 1980s, I visited the Louvre in Paris. There were no lines and I walked right in to see the “Mona Lisa,” staying a while to study the masterpiece up close. No one was allowed to take photos. According this article in the New York Times today, those days are over. Now, in the front the “Mona Lisa” on any given day is a crowd more than a dozen deep, most people taking cellphone pictures and selfies. When I was at the Louvre, there were no cell phones, much less cameras built into them. And had they existed, they weren’t allowed to be used. Now, according to museum officials throughout Europe, many people just take photos and move on, without even looking at the great art. A bit like going to concerts, without listening to the music. Go figure!
