In the early 1980s NASA and DARPA, tested the Sikorsky S-72. It was a compound helicopter with huge wings, capable of flight with the rotors removed. Ideally, the intent was to stop the rotors in flight, to allow the helicopter to achieve faster flight in excess of 300 mph. Because of the dangers of stopping the rotor blades, the S-72 was equipped with explosives on the rotor head, to blow the blades, a split second before the 3 man crew was ejected. They show 3 dummies being ejected at the very end of the video. The Sikorsky S-72 was the closest we have seen to a real AIRWOLF and it is the entire premise AIRWOLF was based... a compound helicopter, with a lifting body... blades disengaged and stopped for extreme fast flight. I hope you enjoy this informative video. And if anyone tells you AIRWOLF is too far fetched... tell them about the S-72, because the theory and premise of how AIRWOLF flew so fast is real in theory. https://youtube/watch?v=jLhZN7fTwQQ&index=2&list=PLB1RPBObrGj7PmsR1-q_GMwXsOxdSESKT
