In the early-late 1960s I was a member of the Georgia Young Republicans. At that time, we were the “Liberal, educated ” party, making overtures to the newly, and only partially, enfranchised African American voters. The other party, although nominally Democrat, were more in tune with the Dixiecrats, that is, white, undereducated segregationists. Unkindly, we referred to them as “Rednecks”. After the ’64 loss of Goldwater, a new crop of home office Republican leaders showed up with what was called the “Southern Strategy”. It was recognized that the bulk of the actual voters were the very rednecks we despised. It was surmised that it would be wiser to cultivate this group rather than attempt to educate them. We started out with philosophical points which we shared: States Rights issues for instance. To the Conservatives of the national party, that had meant as little as possible national interference with state policies on all issues. To our new found constituency it meant only one thing: NO Integration. Second Amendment rights moved from the right to join “a well regulated militia”, to the right to shoot any undesirable whether they were “after our women” or if they were out of state “agitators”. More and more we were trained on how to counter “The nigger block vote”... ~ comment by Arthur John, May 20, 2013 thefloridanation/?p=555
