In the early morning hours of February 22, 1901, a steamship carrying scores of Chinese and Japanese immigrants to San Francisco ran aground in heavy fog and sank, killing 128 people. The loss of the SS City of Rio de Janeiro was the worst maritime disaster in the history of the Bay, and has been called the Titanic of the Golden Gate.
