In the episode Star Trek TNG Hero Worship the Crew of the Enterprise is investigating what damaged a science vessel that killed everyone but a boy. The black cluster that they found was causing a harmonic amplification effect. What that means is that the more energy they put into their shields the stronger the distortion waves emanating from the black cluster, causing damage to the ship. Data ended up saving the ship by recommending dropping shields despite a powerful and devastating wave approaching them. Common Sense would dictate to increase shields even more. But dropping the shields actually saved the ship as the harmonic amplification effect was mitigated by reducing energy going into their shields which caused the wave to loose all its energy. Why did I write this? Well I was thinking. What if evil works the same way? I dont think it is a coincidence that the show called the phenomena a black cluster. It is this very idea that I wrote about in my book as well. We make evil stronger because we fight it, go to war against it and pump so much energy into stopping it. It is a paradox. No doubt about it. In the end, faith is what may save the day. Just as Captain Picard had in Data. Just another musing that I had. :)
