In the final chapter of 1Timothy, Paul tells young Timothy, an aspiring pastor and teacher of believers, there are three things that will dismiss him from the Christian ministry. One is false doctrine...which Paul attributes to conceit and lack of the understanding of Scripture. The second is an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words, constant friction in other words. The third thing, which is prophetic, a harbinger for our age and the plethora of television preachers that plague the church, men who think godliness is a means to financial gain. He comments on that statement with this thought, Godliness with contentment is great gain. That Christian people fall for this prosperity gospel only serves my conviction that this is a biblically illiterate age. How can anyone support a ministry that defies this section of holy writ. This is the section that I hear quoted at least once a week, the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. So how is it I see a huge sanctuary filled with folk who believe worship is for self and not for God, for worldly gain and not for a holy character and lifestyle? So Pauls final charge to Pastor Tim is this, But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Without question, open your wallet or purse, take a good look at your federal reserve notes, and be assured that not one of those greenbacks will outlive these godly attributes.
