"In the following series of posts, I explain that the strategy detailed above, referring to anyone who dares bring up the ways in which ‘race’ continues to play a meaningful role in lives of all Americans as “racist,” is, arguably, the most ingenious tactic devised by late twentieth century cultural-conservatives to block the momentum of the Civil-Rights Movement and inhibit all liberty-loving Americans from reaching our “more perfect” union. It was constructed by a Southern political operative, Lee Atwater, a man who refined his political-operative “chops” while working for Strom Thurmond, the racist Democratic South Carolina Senator who ran for President on States’ Rights ticket in 1948. “Facts are stubborn things,” one of our nation’s most beloved Founding Fathers, and the second President of the United States, John Adams, was known to say. It is for this reason that cultural conservatives do not want Americans to go near a substantive discussion of ‘race’. The facts – that ‘race’ has played such a horrific role in our nations history, and this history continues to play itself out in laws like ‘Stand Your Ground’, deaths to innocent blacks like Trayvon Martin, and acquittals of even wannabe law enforcement representatives like George Zimmerman – demand that Americans do something to reconcile ourselves to our most cherished principles. Many Americans simply do not want to make the sacrifices necessary, so they hide behind the “post-racial” card."
