In the gospel of John we read the story of Peter. After Jesus was arrested, Peter stood by a fire and denied the Lord (with great vehemence) three times . . . after he had specifically claimed that would never happen. He was crushed with the weight of guilt. After the resurrection of Christ, Jesus had breakfast one day with His disciples. At that time, Jesus talked to Peter. Three times he asked, Peter, do you love me? In humility and sorrow Peter said, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. Our Lord forgave him and told him to feed the sheep. Guilt vanished but Peter never forgot what it meant to receive mercy.
