In the hit 1967 movie In the Heat of the Night, its lead actor Sidney Poitier had demanded a request to change the script in such a way that a typical unsurprising moment in the movie would transform into a scene that would become highly controversial and today legendary. The scene originally had Poitiers character, Detective Virgil Tibbs question a southern white plantation owner on a recent crime. When the man feels he is being accused, he slaps Det. Tibbs in such a way that he is supposed to just take it. Poitier would not accept this, he protested that this is not the kind of role or characterization he would portray to an audience. Instead of giving away the final cut of the scene, check it out in the link below, you can probably imagine why it was so controversial for the time. youtube/watch?v=7LsoG2H_aek
