In the hurly-burly of the contentious political issues that consume us, it is easy to forget how trivial they may appear to some when compared with the enormity of the challenges and horrors faced by those who have gone before us ... On this day 70 years ago, the notorious Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi concentration camp was liberated. Auschwitz has become synonymous with the horrors of the Holocaust, with more than a million people murdered there between 1940 and 1945. In remembering those who died there and acknowledging the pain and suffering of those who survived the Holocaust, the world should renew its determination to prevent such evil from occurring again.
