In the last 17 years, Ive raced hundreds of times (literally). If finishing other than in first place constitutes losing, then Ive lost most of those races. If it was all about winning to me, I wouldve quit long ago, especially when I gained 15 pounds after college and barely won anything, yet kept entering races regularly. Racing is about so much more than winning to me. (I have a very strong drive to train hard and win, dont get me wrong. In fact, in the ten Spartan Races Ive raced in since August, Ive won over half of them). When I step up to the line in a competition, whether its a Spartan Race in the woods, 800 meters on the track, or the Boston Marathon, I soak up the feeling of community I get, surrounded by people of varying backgrounds and abilities, each with their own unique story. I feel connected and it feeds my soul in a spiritual way. I take a moment on the starting line to focus and give thanks for my health and ability to do what I love to do. For most of these races, Ive proudly worn the uniform of the organization supporting my athletic dreams, whether it was Blanchet High School, Georgetown University, or Club Northwest. Occasionally, Ive worn a costume to mix things up, keep things fun, stay relaxed, and bring a smile to the faces of those around me. This Saturday, in Tuxedo, NY, I will toe the starting line in a Reebok Spartan Race sports bra and proudly give back on national television to the sponsors who are currently supporting my athletic goals. I only work with companies whose philosophy I believe in and from my research so far, these are companies I can sink my teeth into. (I dont expect them to be perfect, of course, especially knowing how imperfect I am...haha). : ) Feel free to send out a little cheer Saturday morning, wherever you are and you can watch the race on TV if you like on July 22nd!! Though I may not be sporting a Wonder Woman costume at this race, I will certainly bring the Wonder Woman spirit, standing with my hands on my hips at the starting line, ready to roll. Thanks for your support, my friends!!! : )
