In the last 24 hours in Azerbaijan: Over the weekend lawyer Khalid Bagirov reported that his client Ilgar Mammedov, the jailed 2013 presidential candidate and head of REAL political movement, was in poor condition and had not been given food in three days. However, on Monday Bagirov reported to Turan News Agency that Mammedov’s condition had improved and fellow prisoners were providing him with food. At the end of last week it was reported that Mammedov was transferred to a punishment cell after he refused to enter a jail cell with a suspicious person. Mammedov is in pretrial detention and is accused of inciting riots in Ismayilli on January 23-24 although he is based in Baku and only travelled to Ismayilli briefly on January 24 before being turned away from the town by police. Protest actions in support of the protesters in Istanbul, Turkey have been held twice in Baku. On Saturday approximately 30 youth gathered in Foundation Square with signs showing their solidarity. A second action, in front of Turkey’s embassy, was attempted on Monday by approximately 50 youth. This action was met with substantial police interference and a widely disseminated photo from the event shows a journalist being punched in the jaw by a police officer. Azadliq Newspaper reports that in the evening on June 3, Azerbaijan National Science Academy employee Khalida Khalid was turned over to the Azerbaijan government. Other sources have not confirmed this. Khalid and her driver Shamkhal Huseynov were detained on April 30 by Iran’s security forces while at the home of an ethnic Azerbaijani activist in Iran. Six people involved in the “Hijab Freedom” action last October in front of the Education Ministry were sentenced today in the Narimanov District Court. According to islamazeri.az, the men were given prison sentenced of between 6.5 years and 1.75 years. They were convicted of resisting police and/or using violence against police, and violating public order.
