In the last 53 years, the development of Nigeria, a country that is generously endowed with human and natural resources has been subverted by greedy politicians. They hid under the cloaks of tribe and religion to enrich themselves, leaving other Nigerians poorer, with failed infrastructure and lack of a national vision. Obsessed by the oil wealth flowing from the Niger Delta areas of Nigeria than any other patriotic consideration, certain persons had constituted themselves into a cult and hijacked the political machinery, ensuring that only those who can do their bidding have access to political offices at different levels of governance. The implication is that, for the greater part of the nation’s 53 years of political independence, Nigeria has been ruled largely by unfit persons who are largely self serving-whether as civilians or a soldiers. Curiously, the situation has degenerated to a point where a section of the country is arrogating to itself the power the determine who rules and for how long, an aberration that must be resisted by the present generation of Nigerians. If Nigeria’s democracy must be deepened, then such unconstitutional tendencies must be checked. It is therefore against this background that we welcome convocation of National Conference as advocated by many and now accepted by President Goodluck Jonathan. The forum would provide an opportunity for Nigerians to address certain vexing issues that have been at the heart of some of the recurring conflicts in country. At 53, Nigerians must renew their commitment to the unity of the country because there is so much to gain in a united Nigeria. In spite of the challenge of insecurity, Nigerians must keep faith with government because that remains the best option and the objective way forward. At this stage of Nigeria’s development, the country needs patriots who will see beyond their religion and tribe and work for the unity, peace and development of Nigeria: A Nigeria of equal opportunities and justice. We have patriots in the different parts of the country but they have to speak out against injustice, discriminations and corruption. That is the way to go if Nigeria must fulfill her full potentials and take its rightful place in the world. At 53, we must celebrate our unity; we must celebrate our selves as we look unto a brighter future with hope. God bless Nigeria.
