In the last two weeks, there emerged a situation where water shortages hit parts of Nakuru town and its environs. This was unusual because NAWASSCCO has been steadfast in improving water supply-24/7 when possible-to all parts under its jurisdiction. Among the places hit by the water shortage are the Twittas Pub area, Hotel Waterbuck and the Nakuru County Assembly. Later employees of NAAWASSCO staged a protest and blamed the water firm’s outgoing Managing Director John Cheruiyot for being behind the ‘artificial shortage in order to discredit the current management of NAWASSCO’. While we don’t have evidence of such interference by Cheruiyot nor indeed, of anyone close or linked to him or not, we BELIEVE there could be some truth in what the employees said as they are the ones who implement directives issued by their bosses. Admittedly, Cheruiyot was prematurely if not unceremoniously bundled out of office and sent into early retirement from a company that he had put so much energy and dedication into over the years and has been fighting to come on board but his ex juniors aren’t.-apparently for their own reasons or interests-giving him the space to bounce back. Note this. The action to remove Cheruiyot was caused by the NAWASSCO Board of Directors with whom Cheruiyot has been fighting with for some time now, in and out of courts. We are not saying he did it but creating artificial shortages for one to achieve one’s personal ends is simply outrageous and should be condemned in the strongest terms possible. For example, Valley Hospital is amongst those lined up along the pipes that went dry for over two weeks. Isn’t denying supply to such a hospital SIMPLY INHUMANE? What if some patients died as a result of lack of water supply or the added burden of purchasing it by the concerned NAWASSCO customers. Who will compensate them? We think the matter should not end with blame games and being swept under the carpet as it is a very SERIOUS concern to Nakuru residents plus its visitors. Proper investigations should be conducted by the police to establish the veracity of the employees allegations whom we believe would readily agree to give the detectives whatever information is required. Because such an act if condoned and not acted upon could cause catastrophic consequences. Desperate people do desperate acts which in this case may include poisoning the water system to prove their point. We should not await such a situation to occur and call upon Nakuru County Commissioner Mohammed Birik to act swiftly and bring the culprits to book. Such an action may also absolve Cheruiyot from because for all we know, he may not even be in Kenya presently. But as they say, a stitch in time saves nine and for every action there’s a reaction. It’s no laughing matter oooh!!!!
