In the last two weeks we have taken in five dogs who were unable to stay in their homes for one reason or another. ROSIE was found during the awful wet spell in December running the streets of Oakland. After trying everything to find an owner, the finder asked us to take her in. Which we did, and on Sunday this great little dog went into a trial adoption. BITSY was found in Richmond the day after Christmas on San Pablo Avenue. The young woman who found her knew she couldnt take care of her and tried to bring her to Berkeley shelter who couldnt take the dog in because it was from out of their jurisdiction. PAW FUND stepped up, and we have the pup until she finished her legal hold period and then well find this super gal a great home. And today at Berkeley shelter a sweet woman and her kid were sadly giving up a wire haired dachshund cross they have had for over 6 months. Their landlord said get rid of the dog, or lose your home. Again, because the dog was from out of the area, staff at Berkeley couldnt take the dog, so we stepped in and offered to help. The woman was so grateful that we helped and could assure her we would take the best care in finding her pup a home. What we didnt know till later was that the mother - in front of her young child - was berated by a woman in the parking lot of the shelter for having to give up her dog. Most people who have to give up their pets are not jerks or abusers or stupid. Most everyone is doing the best they can, and choosing between your housing and the dog is not a pretty option. Dont yell at the woman goddammit - take on the rental industry with their no pets policies. Damn, Im mad now.... Compassion. A good starting point for 2015....
