In the late 1970s, director George (Night of the Living Dead) Romero desperately wanted to make a straight version of Sir Thomas Malorys Arthurian masterpiece, Le Morte dArthur. Naturally, everyone wanted him to keep making zombie movies, and he couldnt get any financial backing. Then, he said, How about if I put them on motorcycles? That did it, and he got the backing and rewrote Malory, placing it in the 1980s, in a small, traveling Ren Faire world. Ed Harris is excellent as the leader of the troupe, trying to live the Camelot dream.and maintain values in a corrupt world. New England poet, Brother Blue makes a jazzified Merlyn, and author Stephen King even has a cameo, as a hot-dog chomping local yokel. Romeros enthusiasm and seriousness about the topic is evident. As luck would have it, Knightriders premiered the same week as John Boormans Excalibur, and the Romero film was lost in the bigger productions dust, although it got reasonable reviews.
