In the late morning of Sunday, January 18th the rumour began to circle around the coursing fraternity that Vet John O’ Connor of Glenbrook, Knocknagoshel had suddenly passed away. Once this rumour unfortunately proved to be true the level of sadness and shock became widespread. John was the quintessential gentleman and sportsman. His surgery was adorned with pictures of Rugby, GAA and Greyhounds. Johns chosen career as a Vet was in essence the manifestation of his passion. His knowledge of greyhounds and owners was immense and he treated everyone that called to him not solely as a customer but as a friend. It wasn’t uncommon for John to make an impromptu call to a yard to check up on a dog that had undergone surgery, been treated for illness or had recently had pups. John marshalled his time very well but if he knew an owner or trainer was concerned about a dog you would inevitably get the call to make your way to Glenbrook. John accommodated everyone irrespective of how many dogs they owned. His wife Pauline would often accompany him on calls or assist with surgery. John will be missed for several reasons; for his expertise, passion, thoroughness and professionalism but most of all for his friendship. John was a lifelong supporter of Lixnaw Coursing Club where he sponsored a stake every year and as recently as 2013 was involved in the syndicate owning Mission Approved who won the O’ Carroll/O’ Connor Cup. To his wife Pauline and family we extend our sincerest condolences and support at this extremely sad time. To John we say thank you for all that you did for us irrespective of how big or small the request. You will be missed John of that there is no doubt, but you will be remembered with great fondness. Rest in Peace dear friend.
