In the messianic times, people will naturally choose good. The nature of humanity will have shifted. The heart will not desire the improper and we will not have any cravings. Yehezqel 36:26–27 says: “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to follow my statutes, and you shall keep my judgments and do them.” But we do not have to wait for the messianic times. A new heart means a new understanding; it means having a heart that is open to God. A new spirit means being free from desire and will. In Kohelet 12:1, Solomon, who had access to the fulfillment of every conceivable desire, wrote “I have no pleasure in them.” These are the days of the messiah, and they will offer opportunity for either merit or guilt. Evil desires will have no power over us at this time if we stand firm in our commitment to the covenant. May everyone be blessed with this strength and the teshukah (yearning) in our lives now to do this sacred work. Rabbi Gabriel Cousens, MD Torah as a Guide to Enlightenment (Parsha Netzavim)
