In the mid-80s, when The Hot Club had crested and was falling - TopicsExpress

In the mid-80s, when The Hot Club had crested and was falling apart, David and I had spent some considerable time working on new music. Heres how our collaboration worked. Sometime after midnight, David would take a six-pack of Heinekens into a room with a piano in it. He would emerge the next morning with a cassette tape marked Top Secret with a corresponding number. I still have tapes #1-4. Okay BigLoud, hed say, Here it is. Whats this one called? Love Is A French Lie. (He was terrible at song titles and they usually referenced France in some way. Were Going to Paris was featured on Top Secret #2) It was my job to write lyrics and generally make sense out of the chaos. David was terrific at chords and melody, but organization was not a strong suit. Thats What I Hate About Love was the notable exception to his catalog. At the time, I was dating a woman who lived in Carpinteria. David was around so much that I gave him the nickname Buster and she and I came to treat him jokingly as our adopted son. Thats how this song came into being. It was meant to be a satire on songs like Sonny Boy or Watching Scotty Grow where the angels come down and steal away a beloved child. Except in this case, Buster is so noisy and rambunctious that the Angels change their minds and decide to put him back. After the Hot Club broke up, I made a solo demo of the song along with a number of our other compositions on a little Fostex multitrack cassette recorder. Its one of the great disappointments of my long collaboration with Swingy that we never finished a lot of our work together, but Im grateful to have this song that always brings him back into my heart. I hope it gives you a smile.
