In the midst of the debate about free speech (sparked by the UC Berkeley chancellors call for civility when exercising that freedom) it is interesting to recall the conservativism emphasised by one of the original leaders of the FSM, Mario Savio: It’s been said that we’ve been revolutionaries. In a way that’s true. …We’ve gone back to a traditional view of the university as a community of scholars of faculty and students who get together with complete honesty and bring the hard light of free enquiry to bear upon important matters in the sciences and also the social sciences – on what ought to be, not just what is. That traditional view of the university is the one that had been attacked by the revolutionaries who would make it an adjunct to industry, to the government and so forth. The people – us – who fought this fight are maybe the most conservative people on the campus. youtu.be/hlYk-WoBEEg
