In the movie “The Pursuit of Happyness”, there is a line that the protagonist Chris Gardner (played by Actor Will Smith) said near the end of the film. “This part of my life, this little part, is called happiness,” his voiceover stated in a scene in this video clip when the main character learned that he has been hired by the stock brokerage firm Dean Witter Reynolds. As I reflect on the last two years working at my restaurant job, I can finally utter those same eleven words just like Gardner on my last day working as a counter worker today. After five years since I was laid off from my city health department job and constantly looking for another job, I finally found a new FULL-TIME job with benefits (okay, so I have to wait two months before I can actually get it, but hey, I can do that). I’ll be working with the government again (woohoo, love those government holidays off), but this time it will be in the world of politics instead of health. Whether working at a restaurant or in politics, my motto remains the same: helping others by providing excellent service to the best of my ability. Goodbye, Sarku Japan, and to quote the late Entertainer Bob Hope, “Thanks for the memories.”
