In the movie trailer for Sign Painters, the second voice heard is that of Ed Otten. Dont you think a SIGN is something every person, somewhere along the line, has tried? This month, Ed is retiring after 50 years in the sign business. Since 1987, he has been the sole proprietor of a business that he and I started in 1976, and ran together for more than 11 years. In the photos here, Ed is shown working in the University of Iowas sign department, a job he held for about 5 years before going solo. The photo was taken a couple years before he and I met in 1973. The smaller photo in the upper-right is an example of his very early truck lettering. Im happy to say that Ed may be considering an invitation from me to help teach sign painting to left-handers. But I still need to twist his arm a little more...
