In the news: Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Chiefs (#FSIN) Chief Perry Bellegarde addressed the FSIN Assembly in #Saskatoon yesterday, focusing on the need for the numbered treaties to be honoured in order for First Nations people to realize their full potential. Chief Bellegarde spoke of both the successes achieved by Saskatchewans First Nations and the injustices that remain. Among these injustices, Chief Bellegarde addressed the underfunding of First Nations schools in Saskatchewan, which he says receive roughly half the funding of Provincial schools and one third of the funding that French schools receive. The issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women was also mentioned in his address. #MMIW On the other hand, Chief Bellegarde also noted the many unique, Saskatchewan-wide institutions that the First Nations of this province have created, such as the Saskatchewan Indian Cultural Centre, the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technology and the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority. The landmark Treaty Land Entitlement process through which 50 urban reserves have been created across the province was also noted as an important achievement for the members of FSIN. According to Chief Bellegarde, these achievements have resulted because of the unity among the provinces First Nations. The FSIN discussed various items yesterday, including federal government cuts of $2 million to the organization over the next two years, which will create an operating deficit for the FSIN if action is not taken.
