In the northern reaches of Myanmar, two of the most remote and dangerous high-altitude peaks on the planet stretch into the sky. Hkakabo Razi and its neighbor Gamlang Razi both measure more than 5,800 meters (19,140 feet), each vying for the title of highest summit in Southeast Asia. To definitively solve the geographical mystery of which is taller, a team of The North Face and National Geographic explorers supported by a NGS Expeditions Council Grant will travel 300-plus miles overland — across tiger reserves, into plunging gorges, and through cultural areas that have only recently been opened to Westerners — in an effort to reach and then ascend the two mountains with a calibrated Juniper GPS system. Follow along at “Expedition: Myanmar” for blog updates from the field. The team will also be posting to Instagram, using #MyanmarClimb to document their travels.
