In the past couple of months alone, a few of my friends, friends of friends and, today, a legendary actor, have committed suicide. As I am a selfish human being, Im sick and tired of losing people in my life that I care about. People find it difficult to talk about suicide because of their various feelings and beliefs associated with the subject. Sometimes we want to respect our loved ones memories and focus on the good that we choose to avoid the topic altogether. But I would rather bring up an uncomfortable discussion than lose another friend or great person. If you ever had or have suicidal thoughts, dont be ashamed. The world isnt the greatest place to be in right now. It doesnt make you weak. It doesnt mean youve given up. But realize you have people around you who want to help. Most people who choose to commit suicide do so not because they want to die; they just want the pain to stop. There are alternative ways to reach that goal without hurting yourself and your loved ones. Canada has a suicide hotline, Kids Help Phone (not just for kids): 1-800-668-6868. Its a free, bilingual, confidential and anonymous, 24-hour telephone and online counselling service. Youve seen the ads on TV. Feel free to use it. Admitting you need help does not mean youre too far gone. In fact, its just the opposite.
