In the past few days I watched two good movies; one of them is Queen directed by Vikas Bahl starring Kangana Ranaut and the other one is Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Highway starring Alia Bhatt. I found both the movies very interesting for the uniqueness of their storylines as well as the inspirational messages they carry. I have a small objection regarding the story of ‘Highway’ because to me it seemed to be glorifying a kidnapper, possibly unknowingly. Apart from that I enjoyed both the movies. I also liked the acting of both the lead actresses, Alia Bhatt being the better of the two. Although I found all the critics considering both the movies as ones that show the way to Indian women how to discover themselves and to live life on their own terms, I feel the message is actually for all human beings, men and women, to be themselves and not what others want them to be! In our country as well as in many other places a large section of the middle class and many from the other strata of the society too, spend their lives trying to be prim and proper in the eyes of their parents, relatives, spouses, neighbours…….in short the entire society! In doing so, they deprive themselves and remain in pursuit of an elusive ‘happiness’ without knowing what that means. These persons in turn want everybody around them to do likewise. It’s a vicious circle! I have spent the better part of my life being a part of it, trying to be rebellious a few times but most of my attempts had to be aborted pretty quickly since I couldn’t quite gather the courage! Hopefully, things are changing and generation next will find the way to live their own life. It feels good to see movies that try to send such positive messages.
