In the past year, Ive made a few observations of the lifespan of Facebook art communities. Here they are in chronological order: Dawn A.K.A. The Honeymoon - From industry leading professionals to brand new beginners, everyone is throwing in their work to be critiqued and seen by many. Its glorious. Escalation - Art is coming in steadily now. Word has gotten out and the community is growing rapidly. The Facebook feeds are flooded. Plateau - Submissions have reached a steady flow. By now, the real tone of the communitys caliber has been set and a select few rising stars emerge. Drama Bomb - Uh oh, someone stole someone elses stuff/spam bots have plagued the news-feed/suspiciously bad trolls start asking for advice. Wasteland - Submissions are still coming in, though a lot less. Some other new art group has begun elsewhere, artists arent giving a shit about this scene anymore, or there was a mass exodus to evade the onslaught of spam from the prior era. A few loyal contributors continue to submit work regularly though the group is now beginning to feel like a gallery for the few. Though this is merely an observation pertaining to Facebooks past groups, I feel it can also be an allegory to the art-world offline as well.
