In the search for better creators rights in comic books, there are at times companies who push the boundaries and force the Big Two to offer improved contracts & working conditions to compete. Atlas/Seaboard comes to mind, but briefly because while the companies may be important in the business of the medium, they dont always endure and neither do their characters. Continuity Comics founded by Neal Adams is another example. One of the Continuity characters Id seen ads for and anticipated was Crazyman. The Jokers insane, but always interesting. The Creeper is bat-crap nutty and still a cool hero. So why not a hero or anti-hero like Crazyman? Crazyman #1 came out April, 1992, and made 6 appearances in total. Not really a ‘superhero’, Crazyman was Danny Brody, a field operative for a troubleshooting private firm. Unable to manage his emotional extremes, Brody occasionally flips out into violent, uncontrolled rages which culminate in seemingly inhuman strength and a terrific resistance to pain. Whereas this would usually be dealt with by copious pharmaceuticals and institutionalization, Brody’s corporate handlers instead drop him into troubled hotspots and wait for him to flip out on the bad guys. And hope for the best.
