In the second Eastern Veterans Track & Field League meet at Corby, the Huntingdonshire AC women’s team stole the show over the men by finishing joint first in the match, winning eight events and setting two club records along the way. After winning the previous meet, the Hunts AC men had to give way to Bedford & County AC on this occasion despite a haul of seven wins. In the W35 category, Hannah Stirley ran a storming 200m race to snatch the win and come within one-tenth of a second of her club record. With 50 metres to go, Hannah sensed her opponent was tiring and dug deep to haul her in in the last 20 metres of the race. To fill gaps, Sharron Kenyon stepped down in age category but that didn’t stop her from securing victory in the triple jump by 14 cms. Also, stepping down in age category, Maggie Mulholland finished second in the 3000m but was drawn around by a younger competitor to remove almost 8 secs from her own club veterans record. In the W45 age group, Karen Cameron filled in admirably for Maggie by winning the 800m by almost three seconds and the 3000m by just over one second. Sandra Pedley also picked up a brace of wins, first in the pole vault and later in the triple jump which she won by well over one metre. Not to be left out, Penny Butcher easily won the 400m hurdles by almost nine seconds. Penny later teamed up with Sandra, Maggie and Karen to break the veteran women’s club 4x400m relay record by four seconds, the 50th club record set this year so far. On the men’s side, Hunts AC picked up three wins in the 800m with Matt Pyatt taking the M35 race by 10 secs, Peter Downhill the M40 race by 17 secs and Willie Bradley the M60 race by 8 secs. Peter’s time of 2:06.3 places him in the top 10 in the country in the M40 rankings. Making his debut for the club’s veterans team, Jim Stocker took first place in the M60 3000m by a very comfortable 44.3 secs, while Wayne DuBose picked up useful points for the team with a win in the B string mile walk by almost two minutes. Richard Phelan, Willie Bradley, Richard Holland, and Derek Darnell finished off the meet with first place in the M50 4x400m by almost 10 secs. After two meets, the Hunts AC women’s team hold a slim lead in first place in the league while the men are dead level with Bedford & County at the top of the division. The next league meeting is at Bedford on 3 July, followed by the final meet at St Ives on 7 August.
