In the spirit of the season, we thought we’d share some of the favorite Christmas and Hanukkah traditions of our teachers and staff. I hope you are enjoying some of your own traditions today with family and friends! “Listening to Christmas music while decorating the tree and enjoying the Advent Season. --Pat Everett, Rose L. MacDonald School Secretary “My favorite tradition is making cookies or conspiring Christmas activities with my cousin –matching outfits, silly games, gag gifts for our family, etc.” --Melissa Wenzel, Howard School Teacher The day after Thanksgiving putting up the tree and decorating the house with my husband and kids.” --Christine Page, WBMSHS Assistant Principal “Favorite tradition is getting together every Christmas Eve with my family to eat, open presents and laugh so much our stomachs hurt.” Michelle Mischley, WBMSHS Teacher “On Christmas Eve at my in-laws house, the public safety offices combine to have a parade which drives all around the town from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. The parade includes many emergency vehicles with their lights flashing and sirens blaring, and the final vehicle is a flatbed with Santa and his sleigh on the back. The first year the parade neared the house, we were all inside eating dinner and thought a plane had crashed with all of this hullabaloo. Now we go out in the freezing cold every year and wave as the parade passes by.” --Jayson Sylvain, WBMSHS Teacher “A holiday tradition that I have loved ever since I was a kid is being with family, decorating, putting up the tree, listening to holiday music, attending church, eating dinners, and just being together is wonderful enough once one gets past the hustle and bustle of the madness that precedes it.” --John Nenopoulos, WBMSHS Teacher “We light the Hanukkah Candles in my house and after the blessings it is my own little tradition to sing to my kids a peppy little Hanukkah song/ jingle and clap my hands. Theyd roll their eyes as they got older but I have kept it up (when theyre home or on the phone/skype when they are not :) It is my goal to sing that same exact song to my grandchildren some day! I make traditional potato latkes and we eat them with applesauce or sour cream.” --Linda Dubin, Spring Street School and Rose L. MacDonald School Principal “Making Christmas ornaments with the kids…” --Mary Rohnstrom, Spring Street School Teacher “Every Christmas morning, after opening presents and having a bite to eat, our grandchildren play a little concert for us on the piano! This is the tenth year and is a tradition we look forward to.” --Margi Diman, Music Teacher “My favorite tradition is probably building my Christmas village. My mother has had a village since I was little and every year she passes one of her houses on to me and my daughters to add to my village.” –Karen Alves, Rose L. MacDonald School Teacher Santa always delivered pajamas on Christmas Eve as an early sign he was in the area and he knew exactly where you lived. My three daughters continue this tradition with their children. I love to hear how excited the grandkids are when Santa delivers their pajamas the night before Christmas. .)” – Susan Moore, Howard School Teacher “We do the 12 days of Christmas in the children stocking where they open something each day after Christmas, until Little Christmas.” --Francine Sheedy, Spring Street School Pre-School Assistant “My favorite tradition is at the family gathering on Christmas Eve, we all sing (and not well) the 12 Days of Christmas. The names are drawn out of a hat as to which month you have. It doesn’t sound too good but it is a lot of fun.” –Mark Bodwell, WBMSHS Principal “My favorite family tradition is packing up the car for a long drive, hot cocoas in hand and snacks prepared, looking at the decorations and lights all around southeastern MA. There is Christmas music playing, visiting favorite spots, looking for new displays...’The Christmas Drive’ is something my husband and I have done since we started dating and it is a yearly tradition we now do with our boys.” –Jen Enos, Rose L. MacDonald School Teacher A favorite holiday recipe from Scott Cray, WBMSHS Teacher Candy Cane Punch: 2 (10 ounce) jars strawberry jelly 2 liter bottle of lemon-lime soda, divided 2 quarts peppermint-stick ice cream candy canes Melt jelly in 2 cups of soda in a saucepan.
