In the studio the band had finished recording the track. Carlos and Neal Schon had overdubbed and perfected their solos and were very excited about them. I, on the other hand, was thinking Damn, why do they always get to punch in and get their solos perfect, when the drums are always first to go on and that was that. I wanted to play my drums to what they were doing, because I loved it to! I love playing to and WITH melodies! After everyone left I told the engineer to come early tomorrow as I was going to rerecord my drums. They freaked out and said, Please, no Mike! If you mess up it will ruin the whole track. It will be unusable, and they will SO pissed off. I said be here early. I went home to my place on Bay St. in SF where I was living with Wendy Haas. I practiced all night to the song, memorizing the guitar solos and playing to them. Also listening to Freddie Hubbards First Light with Jack DeJohnette. I went to the studio before the band arrived, and told the engineers, Roll tape. Shaking in their pants, they did. And this is what we got....
