In the true Christmas spirit, I would like to share some good news with all the animal lovers on my Friends List. As you know, Pope Francis had recently declared that animals are also entitled to go to Heaven. Courts in his native Argentina were listening. I would like to congratulate my friends at Argentinas Association of Professional Lawyers for Animal Rights who filed a traditional writ of Habeas Corpus on behalf of Sandra, a twenty nine years old orangutan confined to a zoo in Buenos Aires for the last twenty years (see her attached pictures). Argentinas Federal Court ruled yesterday that Sandra, a non human being, is entitled to basic rights such as life, freedom, and a premise of no harm either physically or psychologically. The Court accepted the argument of Sandras legal team that she has been subjected to emotional suffering and pain and ordered her release. She would now be taken to a sanctuary in Brazil where she would live freely in her natural habitat. The case sets up a global precedent and I applaud the Argentine Court for taking this historic step. I hope it encourages other courts to take up other cases of suffering for both human and non human primates. Dr. Muhammad M. Awan 12/25/2014
