In the waiting room this afternoon I found a magazine called Health with a feature on chronic Lyme disease. The author had spent 2 years visiting doctor after doctor for an enormous number of complaints that seemed to have no rhyme nor reason--but were causing her extreme disability. The doctors put her through an extensive number of tests, always with negative results. A couple of months ago, however, she saw an internist who suggested Lyme disease as the culprit. It couldnt be, our author said, I was tested twice. OMG! It turns out their are two distinct camps of medical professionals. One camp follows the CDC guidelines, which assert that Lyme can be quickly cured with antibiotics. The other camp, equally documented medical professionals, follows the guidelines of the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society--which supports different tests and the opinion that Lyme disease left untreated becomes the debilitating chronic Lyme disease. She tested positive for Lyme with the new tests, has been undergoing the ILADS suggested course of treatment now for 8 weeks and is feeling better and better.
