In the wake of recent plane crashes, is fear keeping you from boarding the plane? Here are some tips that might make you feel less tremulous while on board! 1. Read the safety card and listen to instructions (even though it might be boring). Just because you take this form of transportation annually on family vacations does not mean that you should just ignore the seemingly redundant safety precautions being read to you. In a report published a few years ago, it is found that frequent fliers were the least informed on what to do due to complacency. Re-reading the safety card will remind you where the nearest exits are and what to do during a crash landing. 2. Have a plan. Investigations have shown that people remained seated and immobile instead of springing to action after a crash. This is a result of panic and the only way to overcome this is to formulate an action plan so that you can react in time. Know exactly where the exits are and remember the number of rows from your seat to the exit. You will know right where to go in case smoke block out sources of light or the lights fail. You may also listen to and follow the crews instructions, but if they appear to be in a trance, you will have to be quick to make your own moves and decisions. 3. Know the main causes of death. The golden period for escape lasts only up to about two minutes. The actual cause of casualties in a survivable plane crash is often not the impact; but the fire and smoke. People tend to feel more relaxed after realising that they have survived the crash. However, they underestimate the speed at which fire can spread and devastate an aeroplane. If possible, use a piece of wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth to prevent yourself from inhaling too much smoke. Keep your head low, but do not crawl as you will be trampled on and crushed. Instead, just keep your head down. Move to the nearest exit as fast as possible and get out of the plane. 4. Drop your carry on luggage. People do the most remarkable things after crashes, one of the strangest of which is trying to retrieve some, or all of their possessions. Leave them. You do not have time nor the free hands to get your belongings. According to a research conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board: close to half of all airplane crash fatalities might have been prevented had passengers taken proper action.
