In the wake of yesterdays senseless violence, I think its important to reflect. I also wanted to put things in perspective for everyone, especially in the wake of the Mike Brown and Eric Garner cases. I did a bit of research, trying to figure out if there really is a problem with police brutality rising up. Unfortunately, the numbers dont support the claim. Heres what we have. In 2013, according to the National Law Enforcments Memorial Fund, there were over 900,000 sworn police officers. So, lets be conservative, say 900,000. According to the CATO institute, there were 3,814 reports of police misconduct reported in 2013. This involved 4,966 police officers. Now, if we hold to the idea that you should take any complaint statistics and double them you get 9,932. So a little less that 10,000. Lets go up to 10,000, just to be safe. Thats 10,000 police who have been reported to step out of line. 10,000 out of 900,000 police officers. For those that dont know the math, that is 1% of all police that have been sworn that are bad. Now, these arent specific numbers, sure. But they really make you think. The point of all this is simple. We dont need to paint al, police with the same broad brush. Its like when conservatives paint illegal immigrants with a brush of violence and laziness. We are liberals. We are better than that. The violence against officer Ramos and officer Liu was senseless, disgusting, and without merit or warrant. Ive done my research, and I cant find anything that suggest these two officers...helping out their fellow cops...were dirty in the tiniest bit. They both loved being cops. Ill end this with a simple message. No, dont become mindless servants and drones when police dont do their job, and hurt the public. However, dont go around thinking all cops are the enemy. They arent. -The Liberal Rabbi
