In theory, I should feel great today. My side won yesterday. That side being white males of privileged background who plan to die in the next 50-60 years or so (before the rising seas drown our eastern seaboards major cities). I wont deny thats me. I, personally, will probably benefit from the next two years. Then why do I feel so lousy? Perhaps because I know and love many brilliant women and children, minorities and struggling families who will suffer for another 2+ years as the failed policies of previous administrations, and new even worse ideas theyve been tossing around, are thrown in our faces by yesterdays winners. Its also because Im reality based. Im not in denial about global climate change, a growing schism between rich and poor, the lack of upward mobility in our economy, womens health care rights, the underfunding of our schools, the failure of the trickle down system, etc. The list is huge. It is a lousy feeling looking reality square in the face and seeing only a pit of despair (and were standing in the bottom of it). But I remain hopeful that we can come together as a people and figure a way out of this mess. How are you feeling today?
