In this City, a black man couldnt move up too much. Elroy, age 64, started hi career driving dump trucks for the city. He retired as a 2-time member of the million mile club for a private trucking company. Elroy says there were lots of racist problems here in Chattanooga back in the 50s and 60s. Drinking fountains for blacks, and drinking fountains for whites. The only time blacks could were allowed at Warner Park was for the fair. I got to know a lot of good people from different parts of town as a student at Howard Hi. It was new when he went there, when he met his wife there (Damn! Shes alright, then! I need to holler at her!). They married before graduating. They both graduated, had kids, and loved up on their kids. Elroy coached their ball teams. He still drives charter busses on short trips for extra income. He came to MetMin because someone told him we had a Grocery Store for Seniors here. Elroy didnt know that he would re-acquaint himself with some friends from the past! Everybody knows me because I drove a bus for them. Seems that weve become senior citizens now. Everybodys saying to me, Elroy, what are you doing here? Its a good thing. The atmosphere here is real good. Youre doing a good thing here. Thanks for being here so we can be here for Elroy and his friendship reunion. Youre doing a good thing here.
