In this clip from Deutsche Welles Quadriga program, which fundamentally reflects the chaotic nature of this moment in history, former Financial Times and International Herald Tribune columnist Judy Dempsey and German public radio correspondent Burkhard Birke speak on whether the world still needs the American world police. Amazingly - both believe that is does, with Dempsey calling Europeans intellectually, militarily and politically lazy and incompetent. Paradoxically, though, the discussion then moves on to the caustic anti-Americanism that is increasingly the rule in Germany, and Americas dark turn after 9-11. Erik Kirschbaum, an American resident in Berlin, describes the atmosphere. Then German public radios Burkhard Birke says Germans feel that after 9-11, the United States changed fundamentally and under the pretext of anti-terrorism, adopted measures that are not democratic. Judy Dempsey also reiterates that the United States has fundamentally changed into an inward looking country that justifies torture.
