In this discussion of tribalism here in the US, consider that red America - the conservative anti-gubmint America - is notorious for being the biggest welfare states in the US. You know that thing where a bigger percentage of your citizens are so poor they depend on the federal government safety nets, than the blue states citizens do. What do they expect to do about this if they secede? Let the poor people who keep voting repub just starve and die?
