In this fifth installment highlighting watches with an automotive connection, we are showcasing the sporty yet refined Cartier Roadster. Technically, a roadster is a convertible, 2-seat sports car. Cartiers Roadster is a convertible watch, in that you can change back and forth from the metal bracelet to straps made of leather, alligator, or even nylon with no tools and a quick operation! It is like getting several looks from just one watch. To further the automotive connection, Cartier incorporated many design cues from great sports cars into this watch. The recessed case lug screws are reminiscent of the headlights on cars like the 1969-1974 Ferrari Dino 246 GT & GTS. The date magnifier is the same shape as the cove area behind the front wheel of the 1957-1962 Chevrolet Corvette C1. The gearing on the crown is reminiscent of the gearing inside engines and transmissions. The stitching on the leather straps looks like the upholstery stitching on classic cars, and even the font for the word Roadster engraved on the caseback looks like automotive logos from the 1950s and 1960s. I love wearing my Roadster as I enjoy top-down driving on sunny days, and when rainy days strike, I can look at it and think back to fond memories when someone I love was next to me in my convertible, enjoying each other and the gorgeous countryside all around us.
