In this interesting article on the Gulf wind towers, Ben Hughes, associate professor of building physics at Leeds University (UK) argues that these traditional forms of architecture could be an alternative to air conditioned systems in hot climates. Following research initiated by Hassan Fathy, he explains how the wind, as it hits the tower is forced down into the buildings, creating a siphon effect. This technique was used for example in the Lycée Charles de Gaulle in Damascus, Syria, shortlisted last year for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. akdn.org/architecture/project.asp?id=4032
